Port Aransas, Texas

This is a little gem located about twenty miles outside Corpus Christi.  We have been boondocking here about a mile from the Ferry that crosses from Aransas Pass to Port Aransas since the first part of January.   Although the first week was rather rainy, the temperatures have been mostly in the temperate range of sixty to the high seventies.  Winds tend to blow a bit but this area is a boondockers paradise.  Other than where we are, primitive camping is allowed on the beach for fourteen days for the price of a beach parking permit.  Showers are four quarters for a hot shower and free if you can stand a cold one.  Same camping deal without the showers at Padre Island seventeen miles away.  Because this is the off season for a beach town, we have encountered some amazing deals, mostly at the local restaurants.  Filling up on 3 dollar giant Margaritas or eating five dollar half pound burgers  Alot of my time has been spent fishing.  You can't go a day without seeing dolphins.  Sometimes about thirty feet from the bank while drinking your morning coffee.  Same with sea turtles.  Unfortunately the fishing has not been so good.  We will be returning in March when it is supposed to be getting a lot better.
After watching the dolphins as much as we have it is impossible not to be moved by how intelligent and interesting they are. It looks to me, an average, I mean really average layman, that aside from foraging for fish, that these guys are motivated by just play.  I think they even have their own sports Look at the video of these guys racing ahead of the big boats.  Kind of hard to see but this happens almost without exception with every big tanker or barge that passes.

This is another neat video Lisa took while we were fishing on the North Jetty at Port Aransas.

Ghost Shrimping

For Bait

Just us lookin good.

We watched Dolphins 30 feet offshore from this beach behind the Camper.

Frank and Mary, two really nice folks of the many we have met.  Princess is the Border and Charly the Parrot.  After eighteen years with Charly they are looking to leave him in another trusting home because the damn things live forever and will probably be around twenty or thirty years after they are gone
You cant see the three huge Outboards powering this Beauty but after seeing some others of this size with two similar size motors,  I would bet this baby HAULS. Lisa said the THP cars suck but the Boat is awesome.

OK Padre Island is seventeen miles away but it's all Port Aransas.

Camping on this beach is free for fourteen days with a parking pass of 12 bucks.   One chemical toilet is provided.  You are required to leave after fourteen days and stay away for at least 48 hours before you can come back for two more weeks.  Horrors.

Lisa is supportive but not an avid fisher.

And ending with a nice panoramic view of fishing off the North Jetty.  They catch everything from Tarpon to Sharks, Snapper and we watched a 45" Red Drum being pulled out right next to where we were fishing.
